Best Software Platform for Engineering Students

These days the software based projects and thesis work are the most liked and convenient option for engineering graduates, post-graduates and doctoral candidates. No doubt the experimental work done on hardware can never be replaced, as it has an edge over the virtual results produced using software. But the use of software for design, development and verification of the results has increased in the recent past due to accuracy and suitability of numerous software packages available for different applications.

Every software package has a quality of its own. Some are used for system level simulations while some are used for component level simulations, some are good at numerical computations while some are more suited for analysis and visualizations. Few of the software used these days are,

£  MATLAB – Language for engineering computations
£  LabVIEW – Graphical Programming Language to develop virtual systems
£  OrCAD, PSPICE – Design and test component level electronic circuits
£  VHDL – Programming platform for embedded systems
£  Verilog, Xilinx - Programming platform for embedded systems
  £  CATIA – CAD/CAM/CAE Software
  £  C, C++ - Basic Programming Languages

Out of all these MATLAB is the most used software. It is good for system level simulations, excellent engineering computation facility, admirable analysis tools and superb visualization ability. This software is also not bounded to any one branch of engineering. It has toolboxes to facilitate the work of communication, electrical, mechanical, aerodynamics, etc. Also, the hardware interaction capability is nice and can be used to develop and test the software coupled hardware projects.

The projects and thesis using MATLAB can be developed for

  ² Biomedical Imaging
  ² Digital Signal Processing
  ² Image Processing
  ² Communication System
  ² Audio Processing
  ² Video Processing
  ² Encryption
  ² Robot Control
² Fuzzy Control based System Design
² Artificial Neural Network based System Design
² Nature Inspired Optimization of System Parameters

The resources for MATLAB are easily available on internet.

The best book as per my experience for the beginners is

Stephen J. Chapman, “MATLAB Programming for Engineers”, Cengage Learning (Click here to read)

As per my experience, after collecting the basic knowledge of MATLAB, the best way to start your work is to search the title of your work at the MATLAB Central website (Click here to visit the website). You’ll definitely get hold of similar programs that you may modify according to your specific needs.

The links for some of the books and resources freely available on internet are
Ü  Rudra Pratap, “Getting Starting with MATLAB”, Oxford University Press
    (Download)

Ü  Brian R. Hunt, Ronald L. Lipsman and Jonathan M. Rosenberg “A Guide to MATLAB”, Cambridge University Press (Download)

Ü  David Houcque, “Introduction To Matlab For Engineering Students” (Download)

Ü  Allen B. Downey, “Physical Modeling in MATLAB” (Download)

Ü  Todd Young and Martin J. Mohlenkamp, “Introduction to Numerical Methods and Matlab Programming for Engineers” (Download)

Ü  J. Michael Fitzpatrick and John D. Crocetti, “Introduction to Programming with MATLAB” (Download)

I hope the above information is useful for you all.

Enjoy exploring MATLAB,

Nidhika

How to write an Abstract for a Research Paper

What is an abstract? The abstract is a short summary of the research work presented in the research paper. It is usually one paragraph that summarizes the major aspects of the research paper. The abstract allows the author to explain the major aspects of the paper and helps readers to decide whether they want to read the rest of the paper. Parts of an abstract The basic parts of an abstract for paper of any discipline are, 1. The Problem Statement 2. Motivation for the problem – Statement for why is the selected problem interesting. 3. Method / Procedure followed for the results. 4. Results / Findings- Statement for what is invented / created / learnt. 5. Conclusion / Implication – Statement for what follows from the obtained solution. What to include in an abstract? Although abstract is the first section of the paper but it should be written last as it will summarize the contents of the entire paper. To write effective abstract, reread the paper with

IoT for Electrical Engineers

Electrical Engineering is majorly known for generation and distribution of Electrical Power through fossil fuels, hydro power plants, etc. but that is just a small purview of this field. The lesser known but very significant areas of this field include renewable / clean energy, control and automation. The renewable energy generation is the most researched and active area these days. The manufacturing industry cannot be thought without the automatic control techniques. Can you think about packing of chips with hands or controlling a paper making machine without controllers? Obviously No! The internet has touched everyone and has changed the way we live, think and communicate. The next step of this field known as Internet of Things (IoT) is a paradigm of Internet connected Things which can connect, interact and communicate with each other similar to the way humans talk. IoT is not just a link to connect things rather it allows things to communicate and exchange data while executing the

Your Email Address Matters

As your resume is your representation, similar is the case with your email address. It is very common to use stickers on vehicles and T-shirts with slogans for personal expressions. But as a job seeker if you want to create a positive impression, unprofessional or unbranded email addresses are not recommended. It may create your first impression as a person with unprofessional attitude towards job search and next job. You may follow the tips below to choose a professional and an effective Email Address for yourself. 1. Use an email address that includes your name, preferably first name and/or last name, initials, or a minor variation. (This will make it easy for your prospective employers to find you in their inbox and connect your email with your application or resume) . 2. Don’t include your personal information like hobby, nickname, political or other references. (For safety reasons and not to be discriminated on any personal belief) . Brand yourself with your Name. It gives a profe
